TRAVEL RESEARCH BURSARIES

I was fortunate to receive a JOGS Travel Research Bursary in 2021.
This funding assisted me in my move to Toronto for a year to complete my clinical fellowship in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. Moving for fellowship is always a significant expense for people at a trainee level. In my particular experience, it was even more challenging as we had to move during Covid which gave extra expenses such as the need to quarantine for longer and flights being extremely expensive.

My training during my fellowship equipped me with the necessary skills and expertise to become a consultant in Obstetrics and Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology in Ireland. I am one of only three people in the country who have completed this level of international training, and we offer an extremely important unique service to the children and adolescent attending us, many of whom have significant additional medical or social needs. The JOGS Travel Bursary assisted me in my goals of achieving this level of training by giving me much valued funds to travel for this important work and I am extremely appreciative of same.

As an organisation, JOGS is a leader for Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees with the best interest of the individual and the service at heart. I would have no hesitations in encouraging organisations to support them financially in order to assist them to reach their goals.

Dear JOGS Committee and Sponsors,
I wish to thank you for granting me the JOGS Travel Research Bursary. The funds supported my attendance of the RCOG World Congress (June 12- 14th, 2023) hosted in London, UK. At this event, I presented two poster presentations titled:
1. Evaluating blood loss at Caesarean section: a haemorrhage risk-based prospective study
2. Placenta accreta spectrum temporal trends using the Robson Ten-Group Classification
At this meeting, I was excited to listen to world expects on the topics of obstetric haemorrhage and placenta accreta spectrum disorder. The congress offered constructive and up to date information, but also forecasted trends and novel research on these topics. I was able to interact with other delegates from all over the world and learn different approaches to solving problems in healthcare and research. My favourite sessions focused on health equity and the emergence of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

I found attending and presenting at this research and scientific meeting immensely beneficial to further improving my research designs, literature reviews and overall care of patents. In turn, this will further allow me to be a better clinician and to continue to provide high quality healthcare in Ireland.

Once again, thank you for your generosity and valuable sponsorship and I hope that you continue to support Irish research and JOGS delegates at these international events.

I write with profound gratitude and reverence, reflecting upon the remarkable opportunity I was privileged to experience thanks to JOGS Travel Research Bursary 2023 which allowed me to immerse myself in a clinical visit to the Geburtshilfe & Perinatalmedizin Universitätklinikum Frankfurt, Germany from 24th July to 4th August 2023.

Prior to this visit, my experience in vaginal breech deliveries during my decade-long tenure in Obstetrics & Gynaecology was singular. Under the guidance of Professor Frank Louwen and his unparalleled team, I acquired comprehensive insights into the intricacies of antenatal and labour breech management. The unit's commitment to the practice of vaginal breech delivery in an upright position, with an astounding record of about 200 such deliveries annually, resonated deeply with my aspirations. The generosity of the team at Universitätklinikum Frankfurt was beyond clinical guidance. They extended a camaraderie, ensuring I was involved at each significant juncture, realizing my earnestness to absorb every ounce of knowledge. One of the defining moments was the chance to witness a footling breech delivery, a scenario that frequently culminates in a Caesarean section. Observing this, I was reminded of the essential role of proficient management in offering mothers varied and safe delivery choices.

Being on a 6-month hiatus without access to my training funds accentuated the significance of the JOGS Spring Dinner 2023 Bursary. This grant not only empowered my journey but has also catalysed prospective ENTOG and JOGS initiatives. The amalgamation of hands-on training, coupled with the theoretical foundation from the Teach the Breech workshop and insights from Professor Frank Louwen, has been instrumental.  I'm thrilled to share that, stemming from my experiences, we've initiated the One2One Exchange trainee program in the unit. This means that more trainees will be empowered with similar experiences, gradually reviving confidence in vaginal breech deliveries. Additionally, the insights I've gained have positioned me to introduce a version of the Teach the Breech workshop at JOGS Annual Scientific Meeting .

In conclusion, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to JOGS and its benevolent sponsors for continually recognising potential and nurturing growth. Through your unwavering support, I am confident we can drive substantial positive shifts in Obstetrics & Gynaecology practices.

ENTOG EXCHANGE ENDORSEMENTS

Receiving the financial support and endorsement from JOGS to participate in the 2019 ENTOG Exchange in Poland opened up a whole range of career development opportunities for me. The exposure in observing and comparing how Obstetrics & Gynaecology is practiced in other European countries was not limited to Poland as the exchange connected me to trainees from 34 other ENTOG member countries.

The connection with European colleagues is further deepened when I was elected into the ENTOG Executive Committee as the Secretary General. As part of the committee, I had the opportunity to represent European trainees at the European Board & College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG) in key activities and connect with colleagues at World Association of Trainees in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (WATOG), (International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) along with a number of European Subspecialty Organisations. A notable personal triumph is the development of a collaboration with the European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM) to increase Obstetrics & Gynaecology representation in the field of Sexual Medicine in order to raise awareness, educate peers and patients and advocate for patients with Female Sexual Dysfunction – a passion subject of mine.

I have no doubt that these opportunities had led to the development of my leadership, management and research profile as a future Obstetrics & Gynaecology Consultant. These opportunities afforded to me would have been slower to spark if not for JOGS objectives in providing career development opportunities for Obstetrics & Gynaecology trainees and made possible by the deeply appreciated generosity from medical device/ drug companies in Ireland.
