How to prepare an abstract for JOGS Scientific Meeting (and other conferences)

This online webinar held on 4th September 2024 featured expert advice from Prof Amy O'Higgins and Dr Khadijah Ismail, who shared their wealth of experience in crafting captivating abstracts for acceptance to international conferences. As well an informative talk, there was an opportunity for participants to ask the consultants all of their burning research questions.

Learning objectives
  1. Understand and identify the key components that make up a well-prepared conference abstract for medical research.
  2. Gain knowledge about the specific types of abstracts that are often required at medical conferences, and how to approach writing them.
  3. Learn basic approaches to integrating numbers and statistics in the presentation of research findings in an abstract.
  4. Be able to identify and articulate a clear, relevant aim, method, results, and conclusion in their research abstract.
  5. Reflect on and apply the concept of precise and specific scientific language in order to improve the quality of their conference abstract.
Professor Amy O'Higgins is a Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in The Coombe Hospital. She is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology for UCD and the Director of the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction. She has an extensive list of publications and has a special interest in modifiable pregnancy risk factors, such as maternal obesity, gestational diabetes mellitus and aberrant fetal growth.

Dr Khadijah Ismail is a Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in University Maternity Hospital Limerick. She has vast experience in teaching and spent 6 years working as Clinical Fellow with University of Limerick. At the same time, she completed her PhD research on placental cord insertions and their effects on adverse pregnancy outcomes, leading to multiple journal publications. Her clinical interests include labour ward management, early pregnancy ultrasound and benign gynaecology.
